When installing an amplifier in your vehicle or custom audio setup, one of the most overlooked—but critical—components is the fuse. A properly sized fuse protects your equipment and wiring from damage due to overcurrent or short circuits. But how do you know what size fuse you actually need?

⚙️ Why Fuse Size Matters
A fuse acts as a safety barrier between your power source (usually a 12V battery) and your amplifier. If too much current flows through the circuit—whether from a short, overload, or wiring issue—the fuse blows, cutting off power before damage can occur.
Using the wrong fuse size can either:
- Blow too easily (if it’s too small), o
- Fail to protect your gear (if it’s too large)

To calculate the correct fuse size, use this formula:
Fuse Size (Amps) = (Amplifier Wattage ÷ Voltage) × 1.25
- Amplifier Wattage: Total RMS power output of your amp
- Voltage: Usually 12V for automotive systems
- 1.25: A safety factor to prevent nuisance blows while still offering protection
🧮 Example: 200W Amplifier on 12V
Let’s say you’re running a 200-watt amplifier on a 12V system:
[ (200 ÷ 12) × 1.25 = 20.83A ]
Round up to the nearest standard fuse size:
